Teaching
touch keyboarding is usually done with the help of a keyboarding
program. Many such programs are available and all are
based on the principle of slowly training the fingers
to reach precisely a specific key.
Any touch typing program can be used with TACTUS. However,
learning to type on the TACTUS keyboard is different from
learning on a standard keyboard because of the ridges
on the keys of the TACTUS keyboard. The ridges "tell"
the finger when it has reached the desired key. Therefore,
finger training is not as important as is for a standard
keyboard.
Because of this, learning to type with TACTUS can be greatly
accelerated if the students are taught the position of
the alphabetical keys and the main punctuation keys
before they start using the touch typing program.
The exercises included here are designed to make students
familiar with the position of the ridges and to learn
the position of the most frequently used keys.
We recommend that you plan to do them, one at a time,
at the beginning of each computer class. Young students
may find the exercises a little boring and interspersing
them with games or other fun activities will make them
more enjoyable. |
