Exercise 1 | Fingering Guide
Obiective of Exercise
To teach students the position of the alphabetical keys with respect to the ridges on the keyboard.

Prior to Lesson

  • The diagram below comprises the most frequently used keys of the keyboard (the ridges on the keys of the Tactus Keyboard are represented by lines in bold).
  • Note that the letters, starting from the letter Q in the top left corner, can be used to form 6 words, which are listed in the table.
  • The six words are mnemonic devices to help students memorise the location of the alphabetical keys on the keyboard. Each word corresponds to a sequence of keys on the keyboard and should be pronounced as shown. During the lesson you will be referring to this table which you should keep handy.
  • Click here to print a blank keyboard diagram. Make one copy for each student.

Lesson Guide
  1. Distribute the Keyboard Diagram to students.
  2. Go through the instructions below. The exercise should last approximately 5 minutes. When this is completed, start your regular touch-typing lesson.
  3. Repeat prior to every touch-typing lesson until the students have covered all words and can write all six in the correct sequence and without errors.

Key Location Practice
Write the first word (QWERTY) on a whiteboard and ask the students to repeat it after you.

Tell students:

  • Copy the word on your Page, placing one letter in each key, starting with the key that has the asterisk.

Add a new word each lesson. Cover all words learned to date in each lesson. For instance in lesson 2 you would cover UIOP (new) and QWERTY (old).
